Advising Communities offers generalist advice in welfare benefits, debt, housing, immigration, employment, consumer and other generalist issues. We provide specialist advice on welfare benefits, debt and housing, but cannot offer representation at Tribunal or County Court.

Advising Communities offer a range of general advice, as well as special outreach sessions for members of the Latin American community, plus Sure Start sessions for parents and carers of children under five, including expectant mothers.


Our drop-in service is for those who have not received any advice or support from us before. You must also live, work or study in the London Borough of Southwark. We are open:

Provides welfare rights, housing and community care advice to older people from 2 venues in the borough and through home visits if necessary.

Provides support for people in Southwark who have been subjected to domestic abuse or hate crime.

Blackfriars Advice Centre runs an advice service for users of the Bengali Community Development Project, based on the Rockingham Estate in Walworth. There is a drop-in session every week, with a translator in attendance to assist with advice and support.

Advice can be given in areas such as debt, housing, benefits and employment. Many successful appeals have been made on behalf of clients, especially in the area of welfare benefits.

Interpreters can be arranged on an appointment basis.

Provides specialist level casework and representation. Daily reception service for information, advice and signposting.

As part of the Duty Advice Scheme, Belshaw & Curtin, Blackfriars Advice Centre, Brixton Advice Centre, Cambridge House Law Centre, Centre 70 Advice Centre, Lambeth Law Centre Southwark Law Centre, University of Law all have a regular presence at Lambeth County Court. Free advice and representation is given to tenants in Southwark and Lambeth who have been brought to Court for possession proceedings. Representation is also given to home owners in mortgage possession proceedings.

A free public drop-in advice service staffed by LSBU law students working under the supervision of practising solicitors providing generalist advice in any social welfare law matters (except immigration).

Provides advocacy in immigration and nationality to people of all nationalities on a London wide basis. Southwark and surrounding boroughs.
